PINK LINKS FOR BREAST CANCER

The Health Career Exploration Team Members are working on a Breast Cancer Awareness Project.

The goal of this project is to educate the community as well as raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer. The team members will be selling pink paper links for $1.00 each. There will be a competition between the east and west bank on who will buy the most links and raise the most money for breast cancer research. The winner of the competition will be revealed the night of the Hahnville vs. Destrehan football game (November 4, 2011). The chains will be pulled out along the sidelines of each side and after the winner is announced, the chains will be joined together to show how the community of St. Charles Parish came together to support Breast Cancer. The team members will start selling them on Monday, October 24th through Friday, October 28th (at the football game on Oct. 28th also).

Health Screenings

Our Health Career Exploration team members have been preforming state mandated health screenings for nurses at local schools around the parish. Team members preform screenings on kids ranging from ages four to eighteen years of age. The tests consist of vision, hearing, height, and weight. Each screening day, the team members place themselves at different test stations. The team members then cooperatively work together to complete their task for the day.

Good Start

We’ve had a good couple of weeks and I wanted to give you a quick update. For the first few days we focused on orienting the Team Members to the Satellite Center and the Health Career Exploration Work Center. The team members made their first individual presentation to the class. They have been working on creating a presentation on a career that they are thinking about pursuing. Team members were divided into “Critical Friends” groups, consisting of two or three team members, to practice their presentation skills and give/receive feedback. I am really proud of how the team members have come together and collaborated with each other to help each other improve.

I am really excited about the Team Members that I have this year. They seem to be engaged and excited about the class.

Second Harvesters Food Bank

Team members from Health Career Exploration, Culinary Arts and Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Administration recently spent several hours volunteering at the 2nd Harvest Food Bank of the greater New Orleans area. This food bank supplies food and goods to needy families in over a dozen parishes. In the 3 hours the team members volunteered, they were able to distribute and pack over 6,500 pounds of food. This food will directly impact over 5,000 families!
